Top 10 Teddy Pendergrass Songs

Gogoluver

After I heard the news of Teddy Pendergrass's passing I could do nothing other than listen to Teddy Pendergrass, as well as, multiple Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes songs for the rest of the night. Therefore I thought I would put together a list of some of his hits so you can reminisce with me also. Also if you are not too familiar with his music. I thought I would do the simple process of putting you on. Click on to see the full list.

That Next Dude: E. Dan

Gogoluver

Wiz Khalifa's Deal or No Deal was released on November 24th and reached the top of the iTunes store hip hop chart. It also landed in the top ten in iTunes in the overall charts for its opening week. The way he could do this without being on 106 and Park weekly and having his own reality show baffles me as much it did you as you read it. Don't lie to me. It baffled you. But the reason why he is in his position is called grind, commitment, dedication, devotion. There was also a few people that helped him along the way and I had the pleasure to speak to one of them and formulate an interview. Click read more to read an exclusive interview from E. Dan as we talked about producing, Wiz Khalifa, home improvement and the Steelers. Yeah, we touched all bases.

That Next Dude: Wordsmith

Josh aka Choc

I recently had an interview with Wordsmith, who has a project coming out with Chubb Rock. Topics covered range from his upcoming project with Chubb Rock, to his musical influences, to D.O.A. Be on the lookout for his album dropping July 14th with Chubb Rock called Bridging the Gap (click for more)

That Next Dude: Donny Goines

Myjestik

With a new mixtape and a growing buzz, I had the pleasure to ask Donny Goines a couple questions. His name and music has been blowing up on almost every blog and every hip-hop site and our lucky readers get a great interview with Mr. Goines. Without further to do, let's get into it... Kidz In The Hall, Bun B and Talib Kweli Team Up for Change

Press Release

Focus: Kidz In The Hall

As the first group in the Hip-Hop community to publicly endorse presidential hopeful Barack Obama back in late 2007, Kidz In The Hall will continue their unwavering support for the Chicago native this evening (Monday, March 31st) with the help of some friends.

Kidz In The Hall’s whose soulful ode to Barack Obama is entitled, “Work To Do,” will be world premiering their “Change Remix” tonight on super DJ/Producer Green Lantern’s Sirius Satellite “Hip-Hop Nation” radio show. "Read More" for the rest of the story.

The “Change” remix is produced by Kidz In The Hall member Double-0 and features hip hop heavyweights Bun B and Talib Kweli, who like many in the hip hop community, are proud to show their support for Obama.

The song’s content focuses its attention on many of the issues facing both the artists as individuals, as well as the country as a whole. Having three emcees, all from different cities in the US – Chicago, Brooklyn and Houston respectively – shows the unification within the Hip-Hop community that will hopefully encourage young people to take a long look at the issues affecting them in this country.

The “Change” remix will also be the first release that will be featured on the much talked about DJ Green Lantern & Russell Simmons’ “Yes We Can” – Obama mixtape due out next month.

Kidz In The Hall will embark on a 16 city college campus tour this week with Gym Class Heroes to support the May 13 release of their sophomore LP The In Crowd.Talib Kweli has just released the MCEO mixtape with Mick Boogie and his CD, Eardrum, is in stores now. Bun B will be releasing his much anticipated II Trill solo project April 29th.

Chaundon- Carnage Album Review

Posted by gogoluver On 2:51 PM 0 comments

Genre: Hip Hop

Track List :

1. The Greatest Warrior
2. Don't Take It Personal (feat. Darien Brockington)
3. 3 Kings (feat. Torae & Skyzoo)
4. HPNY
5. Angie
6. Everything Ain't Easy (feat. Charlie Smarts)
7. Understanding (feat. Darien Brockington & Percy Miracles)
08. Gone (feat. Jean Grae)
09. Told You That (feat. Torae)
10. Can I Live
11. Carnage (feat. Emilio Rojas & MAG)
12. Selfish (feat. Joe Scudda & Jozeemo)
13. Submission (feat. Skyzoo & Sean Price)
14. We Are Here (feat. G.O.D., Sha Stimuli, & DV Alias Khryst )

I know this album has been out for some time now. But I thought it was still worthy of a posting. The Just Us League members never seem to disappoint me. Chaundon might not have attended "the Yard" or is from North Carolina but he definitely fits the Just Us League in every way. His rhymes have meaning and make you think but you still get the gritty voice of someone from the Bronx. Click Read More to get the full review.

Production: 8 The production on this album is done very well. You can tell that the producers took some stretches on the versatality on their beats. I know that Khrysis, 9th Wonder, and Illmind did some production on this album but could not find out what songs they actually did. But the songs that stand out to me production wise is "We are Here" and "Don't Take It Personal."

Lyrics: 8.5 Just Us League will always be known for having good lyrics and Chaundon is no different. He starts off the album with a verse that makes you listen to every word and wonder what else smart will come out of his mouth and it continues through the rest of the album. He also made sure that he was not outshined by Skyzoo and Torae on "3 Kings" showing that he is not just a conscious rapper. He can boast on how good he is lyrically also.

Song Concepts: 9 The song concepts that stood out to me was Angie. Angie is a song based on a prostitute and her daily life. It made me think of that HBO special "AC Hookers." It shows how she comes from a top notch hooker to pregnant and nothing to do.

Stand Out Tracks:

Don't take it personal- The reason this song stands out to me because of the vocals of D. Brock is what he likes to be called. Chaundon also puts together good lyrics on "hatin ass niggas" because now he has made it.

3 Kings- Good to see a city to come together instead of battling each other and finding out who is going to be the new found king of the city.

We Are Here- The way this song standed out to me was the production. The flute sound in the background was very different. This song also introduced me to three artists that I didn't know.

Not so much Tracks:

Gone- I am usually a Jean Grae supporter but I did not like her on this song. But it's all good though. She is still a great female emcee.

Everything Aint Easy- The chorus was kinda weak to me. But it was a pretty hot beat.

Carnage- This song was just random to me. It seemed more like mixtape material not really meant for an album.

Conclusion: 8.5/10

This album was pretty good to me. It introduced me to new emcees and had me listening to every lyric and not being blinded by terrific beats and bad lyrics. Many songs have real replay value just to see what you might have missed the first time listening to it. I look for more things from here and even better.

March Madness

Posted by Matchz Malone On 7:30 AM 0 comments
No, we aren't talking about basketball in this scenario. Its all about the new trend in hip-hop of getting arrested on gun charges. "Swiped" from NY Daily News

The violent, thuggish side of hip hop reared its knucklehead this month in an outbreak of March Madness.

One imbecile after another, determined to act like criminals with "stret cred," ended up in disastrous, predictable and even deadly encounters with the law and each other.

As always, the criminals were aided and abetted by recording companies, radio stations, music video channels and Madison Avenue marketing men blindly throwing money, fame and marketing deals at anybody claiming "street cred" without demanding decency, lawful behavior - or even musical talent - in return.

Remy Smith of the Bronx, aka Remy Ma, was convicted of shooting a woman in the stomach outside a club in the Meatpacking District last July. She faces between eight and 25 years behind bars.

As they hauled her away in handcuffs, Remy screamed, "Oh, my God! My son! My son!" - a reference to the 8-year-old boy she should have thought about before squeezing the trigger.

Two days earlier, a rapper named Leval Lyde, aka Cavlar, was shot to death in broad daylight on Fulton St. in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Cavlar, who lived in Bed-Stuy, was a recording "artist" who contributed to an especially noxious new phenomenon - songs made and distributed on homemade underground "beef" DVDs, in which performers directly threaten to beat, rob, shoot and kill one another.

Some of Cavlar's rap-threats can be found on his still-active MySpace page and on "Step Your Game Up" underground DVDs. You can also find YouTube videos showing a physical showdown, complete with pushing and shoving, between Cavlar's crew and Brooklyn rapper Uncle Murder.

"He ran across the same type of individual that he himself was and he got caught with a sandwich instead of his gun in his hand," wrote an anonymous poster to Save Brooklyn Now, my blog recording violent crime in my neighborhood.

"Don't get it twisted, it could have easily been the other three people who approached him that could've been left on the ground," said the writer.

Cavlar leaves behind three children.

Down in Atlanta, rapper Clifford Harris, aka T.I., pleaded guilty to weapons charges last week, for which he'll spend a year in prison. Federal authorities running a sting operation caught T.I. buying three machine-guns and two silencers.

That's a no-no for the rapper, whose past convictions on drug offenses make him ineligible to own firearms.

Earlier this month, rapper Trevor Smith, aka Busta Rhymes, pleaded guilty to weapons possession and assault in connection with an attack on two men in 2006. Rhymes is notorious for not cooperating with police in the still-unsolved murder of his ex-bodyguard, Israel Ramirez, during a video shoot in Brooklyn two years ago.

Another outbreak of March Madness took place in Los Angeles, where rapper Jaceon Taylor, aka The Game, was released from custody after serving eight days of a 60-day sentence for possession of a gun on school property. It seems The Game got into a beef during a basketball game and settled it by waving a weapon around.

In New Jersey, LaRon James, aka Juelz Santa, was arrested on March 4; cops say he was driving with a suspended license (not good) and had pot, $19,500 in cash and dozens of hollow-point bullets in his Bentley (really not good).

Recording companies, cable stations and radio stations could put the brakes on the nonsense by implementing - and enforcing - a total ban on idiots who break the law.

Such good-behavior clauses are already written into pro sports contracts. Entertainment companies have the power to do the same.

When will they stop the madness?

Food for Thought

Posted by Boogie Down Blog On 3:15 PM 0 comments

When the students of hip-hop graduate to the top of the class you expect them to take on the world with what they learned.

Food for thought is full of sharp rhymes and clever beats that pay homage to greats while not being affraid to try something new. Don't get it twisted, this album is for the listeners.

The album has minimum guest appearances and theres only one producer. As a result the album is very coherent.
Bncrediable provides some of the most clever rhymes in the game, while shadow provides him with the floor to walk on.

As for rating the album. It is what it is. Listening to this album you can tell these guys do it for the love of the game. I can't knock them for that. So as far as I'm concerned the album is perfect.

Standout tracks- Blame it on my love, Food for Thought, Just Listen, and Keep Pushin.
Don't take my opinion as the word of god. Download it yourself and show some love.

Family Feud???

Posted by gogoluver On 10:24 AM 5 comments

I put A Tribe Called Quest in my top 3 of favorite duos with Pete Rock & CL Smooth and EPMD. But maybe Consequence will later down the line be better than Q Tip??? Is this a stretch??? I mean the last thing we heard from Q-Tip that hit the radio airwaves was “Vivrant Thing” and “Breathe and Stop” which we all know how good those songs were. (Shakes head in disgust)So can it be done in the next five years? Will Consequence outshine Q-Tip in the hip hop game??? Will Davidson win the NCAA Tournament??? Is Lil Jon's career really over?? Click Read More to hear me rant on

Consequence lately has been coming on very strong while working with Kanye West. Take Em to the Cleaners was a very good mixtape and was a good introduction to say I am ready to get out of A Tribe Called Quest shadow. He put out his debut album, “Don’t Quit Your Day Job, and has put out six videos for this album from what I can count which he claims has financed most himself. He even offered a refund on his Myspace if they were not satisfied by the album they could contact him since he was getting bad reviews by major publications. So let me give you a sample or show you mentally why maybe he can be better than Q-Tip.

Good morning to Queens, the north side of my scene
And when it comes down to it, I'm a ride for my team
See it's a beautiful life, but the bills will make it ugly
And the beauty of life, is when you're forced to make it ugly
Had a beautiful night, until a storm done made it ugly
And a beautiful wife, now we divorcing and its ugly
Now my mind state is ugly, my blind dates are ugly
I'm ready to turn it up in the streets and make it ugly
Used to sit in Mr. Uglies with these chickens that were ugly
And these bitches used to bug me to the point it made me ugly
Say things that were ugly in regards to their tummies
But I took it all back, cuz God don't like ugly
Now I'm curbin my bad words, they say that the bad burn
I left it on bad terms, with a chic with a bad perm
Whose case took a bad turn, and face caught a bad burn
And took the news bad when they said she had bad germs
The bad thing about it, the bitch was bad and bout it
But the pussy smelled bad, so I had to get up out it
So now we got bad blood, her son is a bad blood
But it happens in the hood when you inherit that bad blood
And once it get bad, it be bad for good
THAT'S BAD MEANING BAD NOT BAD MEANING GOOD
But I greet it as good, when you leave with the good
Its all good in the hood, got called good cuz I'm good
Now I'm havin some good nights, livin this good life
Got me a good girl that I'm gon make me a good wife
So I'm, good to go, and I'm good where I go
Look my man got good aim and that's a good thing to know
And he came home for good, off of good behavior
Spittin that good game, so what's good with this paper
And this is for the hoods, the crabs, the junkies
We showin you the good, the bad, the ugly

In my book, that is considered hotness, hot FIYAH, real good shit, a bob ur head through the whole verse moment. So let me give a short 7 step by step plan how Consequence can get this done.

1. Put out four good solid albums.
2. Stick by Kanye West side as long as you can.
3. Don't leave the hip hop game abruptly and lie to everyone that you coming back with that new FIYAH!
4. Don't make a video with girls in shiny aluminum foil clothes
5. Have anyone of these producers on each of your albums: Pete Rock, Erick Sermon, Kanye West, Nicolay, 9th Wonder, Just Blaze, Hi Tek, and DJ Premier.
6. STAY FAR AWAY FROM G-UNIT!!!
7. Don't enroll for Army, Air Force, Marines or anything of that sort.

Oh yeah, and Davidson will not win the NCAA tournament. UCLA will.
Lil Jon's career is over if I have anything to say about it.

Thank you for listening and comments will be greatly accepted.

Corinne Bailey Rae's husband was found dead on Saturday. Jason Rae was only 31 years of age. According to early reports, the cause of death was a drug overdose. The police discovered the body of the Scottish-born saxophonist at an apartment at the Hyde Park area of Leeds in the UK. The police have already arrested a man who they think supplied the drugs to him. But he has already been released on bail. I will keep Corrine Bailey Rae and her family in my prayers. Corrine Bailey Rae was one of my favorite artists I discovered last year and makes very good music. She is also has the natural beauty about her. "We must keep our minds unclosed to make change. Conventional ideas to change our conditions will not work. May this recording serve as an example of a bold attempt to reach into the past to create new possibilities." - Replife (Album notes from The Unclosed Mind)

I don't know if could sum up this listening experience any better than that. This album looks outside of the box in terms of production & lyricism. This album will take you on a journey outside of your normal consciousness as you take a journey through your Unclosed Mind. This album is an example of what Hip-Hop could potentially be if people continue to think outside the box of simple "Rap" production and go into some real instrumentation. Click "Read More" for the review.

Production 10 - One thing I can say about Replife is that the man sure can pick some beats. The production from track to track is uncanny, my favorite is The Left Side Of Things. The production is similar to jazz, or what you would hear on a neo-soul record but he manages to make it very much Hip-Hop. Words cant really explain the production properly, so here are two examples: The Left Side of Things & Put It Down

Lyrics 8 - I must admit, this guy doesnt seem to rhyme very often. But indeed that doesn't always matter. As hip-hop to me is a form of poetry and poetry as we all know often does not rhyme. Phonte of Little Brother said it best "I got your head still bobbing and my verse didn't rhyme." So to me as long as it still flows, or tells a story it is allowed. Replife gets away with just that, he does not always seem to rhyme, or follow a noticeable rhyme pattern when he does rhyme, but you can follow where he is going with it. The song Pangea is a prime example of his storytelling ability making you think about unity and time when all was one.

Song Concepts 8 - Even though they aren't technically "songs", the interludes made me think something serious, and there is still production done for the beats of them so they count. Some of these tracks make you want to just grab a book and read up on your history and start your own movement or re-invent what some past musicians have done. Whats keeping this from a 9 or a 10 is tracks like "Emerald City" which really remind me of some PackFM, Extended F@mm type stuff just rhyming all over the place, not making any really sense. This particular track I am sure must be full of metaphors I am just not catching.

Stand Out Tracks
1. Nommo - Okay, this an intro, but I would be lying if I said the production on this didn't have me sold from jump. This intro talks about how life itself isn't real and just a projection of our imaginations. It sounds like a speech from something like "What the bleep do we know?" or an oral account of "Disappearance of the Universe."

8. The Left Side of Things - Again the production is what had me sold on this song. I may be thinking to deep into this, but I think it may be a subliminal reference to the left and right brain. From what I've read the left brain is reference to "past and present" and as he mentioned in the liner notes "May this recording serve as an example of a bold attempt to reach into the past"

13. Out Of Soul - Let it be known, that I LOVE jazz music, this track is mostly that. A jazz "beat" or instrumentation is what makes this track enjoyable to me. On top of this is Spoken Word or Poetry that is talking about soul, history, the real and unreal. Replife often repeats on this track "And what of soul, without yelling over a drumroll? That style is old"

I can only add I wish the album notes said who are playing these instruments.

Not So Much Tracks
My only not so much track is "Spirit (Dilla Shines Through)" but I think that may just be me, because I was discussing the track on okayplayer.com and others there seem to like it. I believe it was the only track by Replife anyone had heard.

Conclusion - 9/10
"The Unclosed Mind" is an album full of amazing production that makes up for any times that Replife doesn't rhyme in the sense that we as listeners have grown accustomed to. I would definitely recommend buying this album tomorrow when it comes out in stores, though I have a feeling it won't be at your usual Best Buy, I bought it in Atlanta at this premier "Hip-Hop, Neo-Soul, Afro-Beat, everything that isnt mainstream (I.E. Lil Wayne, Shawty Lo, Flo Rida)" store.

Under the unfortunate circumstance you cant find it in a store buy it here on Amazon.com

Incase his label is snooping around, I bought an official copy The store just had it early, no bootlegging here :-)

Another NY Rapper Bites the Dust???

The paint hasn't even dried on his last album or his latest mixtape, but Fabolous is ready to embark on a new project. With a theme behind his next album, some plans to release a film-inspired joint, and some Jay-Z inspiration, Fab is ready to hit the booth.

"I usually go around and just get with producers I feel I wanted to work with. This time I'm going off a theme," he told MTV. "I'ma put a theme together and just go off of that theme. Sometimes producers get lost trying to figure out what they think is the best type of shit for Fab. [They say,] 'I got this commercial joint for you.' So what I'm doing now, I seen a movie I want to theme the album after. Even take certain lines, different scenes out of the movie and make music behind that. At the same time, I can have the producer check the movie out, and he'll have something he can take away from the movie and come back with some joints. I wanted to try that this time."

"What Jay-Z did [with American Gangster], he took that Frank Lucas character and put it in the frame of his Jay character. That's what I wanna do. I don't wanna say I that I'm actually the character, but take some of his scenarios or some things I went through and tell it in my tone."

Read the rest by clicking Read More.

DJ Toomp, Kanye West, Just Blaze and Polow Da Don are only a few of the producers Fab wants to take part in the album.

"I think it will make me a little faster for some reason... When I just go in with producer and just make music, I'm really going in. I don't know what they are gonna play me. I don't know what I'm gonna get off the beat. It's pretty much whatever comes up. But this time I watched the movie myself, wrote some things that stuck out in my head and tried to make songs off that. This time it should be easier. Well, not easier, but faster."

In between-time, Fab is also collaborating with many singers, including Britney Spears and Ne-Yo. "I didn't get to kick it with [Britney], but the people from her record label was on top of that...I don't know what condition Britney is in right now. Hopefully — more power to her — she'll get in a better space and position. Somebody needs to sit her down, let her know what the deal is," he said of the Pop paparazzi queen.

He also added that working with Ne-Yo gave him another Jay-Z inspired theme.
"I been telling him we need to do the Best of Both Worlds for young, fly niggas. I don't think [a clash of the egos] would happen with us. [We're] two good, humble brothers. If we make some great music, people would love it and the demographic we would hit ... It would be great for us too. I think we can pull off a Best of Both Worlds."

My Opinion:

When I read the first half of the article. I thought in my head, "yeah, F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S"...Then I read he collabo with Britney Spears and i almost just stapled my fingers together. I could see if he was working with a hot female artists that still has a career like maybe Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen. But Britney Spears is pretty much down on her luck and washed up. Maybe the production will help boost the album and make it solid. But all I have to say is I am not looking forward to it. But the best of both worlds with Ne-yo would help his career so much.

Gnarls Barkley- The Odd Couple Review

Posted by Myjestik On 12:27 AM 0 comments

Tracklisting
1. Charity Case
2. Who’s Gonna Save My Soul
3. Going On
4. Run (I’m a Natural Disaster)
5. Would Be Killer
6. Open Book
7. Whatever
8. Surprise
9. No Time Soon
10. She Knows
11. Blind Mary
12. Neighbors
13. A Little Better

Before I did this review I decided to look at other reviews to see what the “media” thought of The Odd Couple. Like I expected magazines and blogs across the net gave this album a low grade because of its inability to connect with the “average listener”. This reason makes me sick to my stomach. Just because not a sound that every one uses and it’s complicated to get the meanings of each song doesn’t mean the rating should be low. This album is great. This is what music is. A way to innovate yourself and make people think. I am not going to dumb down my review because people need to smarten up. Sorry, but I may offend some people. Lol.

Production 9- The production on this album is on point on every song. Every song is different even though DangerMouse is the only producer on this cd. It actually sounds DangerMouse was in a time machine when he was on his keyboard. We get some sounds of the ‘50s, Grease kind of music and some sound like an alien produced it. Every song has a different sound with one producer. This recipe is what is used to make a classic album. The use of one or two producers makes classics, for example, Graduation (Kanye West), Below the Heavens (Exile), Be (Kanye West and J. Dilla), and Popular Demand (Black Milk). I love the production. It maybe should get a 10, but I’ll leave it at a 9.

Songs 10- I’d usually do a lyrics and song concepts paragraph, but singers don’t really use metaphors and such in their songs so I can’t really base an opinion on it. Instead, I’ll put them both together. Cee-lo’s songs on this album are classic. Others gave this about a 6, but they’re pretty much idiots if you ask me. I admit every song takes a while to get a song, and it takes a while to get use to it, but once you do, you’ll think the songs are phenomenal just like me. Every song is different. All of them do not talk about love and going to club. They actually mean something. Just because people are too dumb to get the meaning, doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Dope Tracks
2. Who’s Gonna Save My Soul- The beat is one you just nod your head to. The lyrics are the most powerful words that I have ever heard Cee-lo say. A song Marvin Gaye would be proud of. A guy who is worried about his sorrow, but realize that other people go through worst. So? Who’s gonna save my soul now?

3. Going On- My favorite song on the album with no contest. I like love how everything goes together so perfectly. The guitar screeching in the background is great. Cee-lo is great with the verses and the chorus. You have to listen to it to know what I am talking about.

6. Open Book- People may disagree with me here. It’s kind of a weird song, but I love anything different. The drum pattern from the outset of the song makes you know that something strange is going on. The verse is so dark with Cee-lo and an echo effect. Then you get to the chorus… COME ON! HELP ME! COME ON! HELP ME! I AM AN OPEN BOOK!!!! AN OPEN BOOK!!!!

8. Surprise- Bring it back DangerMouse! This song sounds like some old 50s song, with the Beach Boys in the background. I can picture an old beach scene with girls in bikini’s singing along to the song. You know those sing breaks old 50s movies have. Don’t act like I’m crazy. That’s St. Elswhere type stuff lol.

11. Blind Mary- This song would probably played on an evil mary-go-round at an abandon carnival. The song is really not evil, it just sounds like it. Again, DangerMouse is on point with the beat, Cee-lo’s good too, but the reason I like this song is the message behind it. Cee-lo is in love with a girl that is blind because she likes him for his personality and not his looks simply because she cant see him. This is a message to you superficial girls that only look at looks for a dude. The thing about this song is if you’re a “casual listener” you will never know what he is talking about. “Eww, he’s in love with a blind girl.” Idiots!

13. A Little Better- The outro is a great way to go out. After the cd I am now satisfied. I feel a little better. I don’t see how people can not like this cd. Now that you finished the song, press that rewind button your iPod, and listen to it again because if you’re a casual listener, you’re going to have to.

Not So Much Tracks
I can’t complain about the rest of the cd. Just like every album, there are going to be better songs than others, but there is no real bad ones.

Conclusion
The Odd Couple is a great album. I don’t care if you disagree. This is a great album. Every stanza, every chorus, every beat is on point. I would actually rate it a classic, but I don’t want to hurt the feelings of the “casual listener” so I’ll give it a…

9.5/10 lol. Cop this album on Tuesday. You’ll find me at the local Best Buy.

Album Review: Frowns by M.I.C.E.V.E.

13 Alright
With the new year ringing in with rap beefs and more mainstream bangers, comes Ohio native M.I.C.E.V.E. with his debut album, "Frowns". The album has good beats, and the artist himself is good, but the album seems to lack something.

Lyrics - 7

Im going to keep this part short because there isnt really much that can be said. M.I.C.E.V.E. has a sound similar to Lupe Fiasco, and Lupe's problem off of F&L has plagued him as well; his flow need works. He doesnt take a breath every other word or whatever, but it just seems that he has to work on his flow.

Production - 7

The beats are apparently done professionally, but in my opinion it seems as if you could make these on Fruit Loops or Garage Band or something. Also, the song "Introduction" samples a song that MF DOOM sampled in his song "Hoe Cakes", and MF did it better. Call me biased, but that's how I feel.

Song Concepts - 7

You know in the beginning I would have given the song concept part a higher score. But now, this is just starting to get old. Same song concepts... blah blah blah raised in the streets, got out and got a deal, now Im here spittin to y'all about it. YAWN. On a side note, I just thought in the song "Loser" was funny because he said something about jacking off.

Stand-Out Tracks

African American - This spoken word epic talks about the state of the African American community. Even though this has been a subject of artists for about 20 years, it's good to see an artist who takes time on their albums to try to give the community a wake up all.

Overall - 7/10

This is a solid album, but it just seems like it's watered down/ not enough content. The production is alright, and the artist needs to work on his flow. Unless you're a die-hard fan of him, or want some laid-back hip hop, pick this up. For everyone else, Im not saying stay away, but it isnt a "break my neck to buy" album.

Never mind that artists like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor are releasing albums online. And forget that ringtones have helped lift rappers like Flo Rida to stardom and earned them some serious money.

These digital experiments apparently don't interest hip-hop icon DMX.

"I don't even think about it," the multiplatinum-selling rapper told a writer for hip-hop magazine XXL in a recent interview. The response came when the journalist was trying to ask how DMX feels about music increasingly being distributed through the Internet.

Click "Read More" for a snippet from Interview

Here's a snippet of the interview:

XXL: How do you feel about the digital--like, everything going through the Internet as far as...
DMX: I don't even think about it. I don't even think about it.
XXL: The music business is pretty much going in that direction.
DMX: I don't know. That's just...that's probably not...People want the actual CDs not no s--- that's disposable.
XXL: It's like the ringtone rappers are the guys that are selling right now.
DMX: Good for them, good for them. I'm glad they eating right now.
XXL: You don't feel a certain way about that.
DMX: Nah, I don't even think about it, for real. I mean, it's a waste of energy to think about what somebody else is doing and how they doing it. I'ma just do what I do. All that s--- is a headache.

That's the front he's showing at least, because his music is definitely available online.

DMX, who's preparing to release two albums later this year, shares some tracks on his official MySpace.com page, just as so many signed and aspiring artists do.

And I have to wonder, has DMX bothered to log onto Apple's iTunes store recently? I just did and found not only an ample catalog of his works, but an exclusive 15-track "Essential DMX" compilation featuring anthems like Party (Up in Here") and What's my Name?

Online music, by the way, isn't the only thing that's not on DMX's mind. He apparently wasn't familiar with Barack Obama at the time of the interview in late January.

Pyroradio.com: What’s going on Estelle the ‘American Boy’ track is happening right now!

Estelle: It’s moving, it’s a lot of work but it’s moving, I’m happy!

Pyroradio.com: The ‘American Boy’ track explain it to me I saw the video and all your dance moves !

Estelle: (Laughs) The track is just fun, we weren’t even serious about using the track, me and Will I Am were messing about trying to make John Legend like house music and he kept saying keep your house music. Then when we made the American Boy beat we left it on and when John came back in he was like ooh! We were like you like it now init (Laughs)

Pyroradio.com: Did you have to convince Kanye West to do it at all? I’m hearing him with the London Slang with the wags!

Estelle: Not at all, he said all that on his own with the wags, London blokes. I was like you been to London a lot huh, which he has, but as far as the Ribena it was all me (Laughs). He was always gonna do the track he was just finishing his album and starting his promo. Actually the first thing he done after mastering his album was come to the studio and record American Boy, he’s like John’s label manager and CEO so it’s kinda like uncle Kanye (Laughs)

Pyroradio.com: Who else would you wanna feature with because I know on this album you’ve got Wyclef, Swizz Beats, Mark Ronson, Will I Am, Kanye West, is their any other people you’d wanna feature with or is there things in the pipeline?

Estelle: I wanna do something with Mary J Blige, she’s one of my idols, I wanna do something with Busta Rhymes which is in the pipeline, there are a lot of people I respect and admire.

Pyroradio.com: John Legend said he’s thrilled to be apart of your career, how does that make you feel? Does that put pressure on you at all?

Estelle: Na no pressure, it makes me happy, he’s an amazing artist. Look at the dude he’s won five Grammy’s he’s thrilled to be apart of my career! That’s some fantastic wording I’m not mad (Laughs)

Pyroradio.com: You know I have to speak on the rumours! Was then any ever dating going on?

Estelle: No, every time someone asked me that I think you see me work this hard, why would he be dating me to see me do all this and get signed. I’m extra single right now. I’ve worked HARD physically and emotionally people saying she got her deal because of that is insulting. People in general when they say that I think you’ve seen me work this hard and your saying that.

Pyroradio.com: What’s the reception been like in the states?

Estelle: Some of them are amazed a Black girl speaks British (Laughs) and after they get past that they are like you are you, you are real, I like that, your classy about it, your not just showing your titties about.

Pyroradio.com: But we wouldn’t mind seeing that!

Estelle: No (Laughs) don’t get it twisted I wear low cut tops and that but not in the way that’s distasteful, that’s not my marketing tool, it’s not what I want, I want people to hear what I’m saying . If I dress like that, that’s how I would dress to a party not to say look at my joobies (laughs)

Click "Read More" for rest of interview.

Pyroradio.com: Would you say this albums do or die? Do you feel added pressure and expectations?

Estelle: Nah it’s the next step in the career. I think everyone has pressure. Everyone’s feedback to me is that it’s a great album whatever way it goes you made a classic, my thing has never been to sell reh reh, trust me if it was like that I’d be super depressed from the first album (Laughs). My thing is about the shows and making the fans feel me and making sure I have a career in touring because trust me music isn’t selling anything anymore, so I’m not too bothered about sales and I’m not judging my career on the sales, I’m more judging it on how many shows can I rack up in a year and how much of that can I keep going until the next album cycle.

Pyroradio.com: In the past there has been a lot of comparisons between you and Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse how does that feel?

Estelle: They said in Rolling Stone magazine I was Amy and Lauryn minus the crazy that was funny considering I don’t look like either of them. You know what their amazing artists their music will last the test of time so I can’t be mad at it and if they listen to my work in ten years time how they listen to Lauryn put me in that lane all you want.

Pyroradio.com: Your album Shine was meant to come out in Febuary but now it’s coming out in March (April 29th US)

Estelle: Yeah we pushed it back because Kanye was featuring on the single and we wanted to shoot a video and give it more promotion. About the time we were gonna shoot the video was when his Mum passed away so we had to put everything on hold, out of respect as well until he wanted to get back at it and give it his all, the thing I respect about Kanye is that he’s amazing with his vision and what he see’s so were weren’t like just come in and shoot the video, it’s a sensitive thing. I came out on tour with him in the UK the week his Mum died and buried his Mum and I tell you watching this guy on stage I had a whole different level of respect for him, something happened to one of my family members quite similar when I was doing the tour and I had to sing ‘1980’ I was borderline teared up the whole song, he done a whole show no crying nothing, five nights in that week, I was up there like you are special. My family member didn’t even die but was real close and I didn’t even know what to do with myself I was sitting in the show changing rooms loosing my mind and this guy got up there and did a two hour show just after burying his Mum, who was real instrumental in his life, I have a whole different level of respect for him, we put everything on hold and were like as soon as your ready. I’m a human being first of all so we have to respect, so we done the video in January and we got back on it, so we needed more time to promote so now here we are.

Pyroradio.com: So what can the people expect from the album?

Estelle: The album is a lot of Soul music, Reggae, Hip Hop, Dance it’s a big mix up. The thing with me is I’m not one to do one genre of music and be happy, I thought I’d do them all and fit it on one album. It’s a lot of real talk too, there is a lot of me cursing out people who irritate me, boys, extra single! (laughs) ‘Substitute Lover’ may be the next single , there’s some love songs because for every crazy guy there were one or two that were good and then just life songs like ‘Shine’ which is like a continuation of 1980 and the real me, with the fact I’m scared of having kids because I’m scared of pain! I don’t want to be bad as a Mum cos I’m scared of pain and that was me being real, sometime I’m tired and have to act extra happy but I don’t want to talk to no one but their like you should be good right now, but I’m like I’m PMS’ing don’t talk to me and I have to still be a certain way, so I made tracks from every experience and everything I go through!

Big Pooh & RJ - The Recipe Press Release

Posted by Matchz Malone On 4:17 PM 0 comments
Lauded in their respective sects of the music industry, producer Young RJ and lyricist Big Pooh join forces to produce a project unlike any that's ever been heard before. Working with industry pioneer Scrap Dirty of Violator Managements AllstarDJs and manager for the Grammy-nominated Young RJ, the RJ/Pooh duo will inevitably be a classic. Click "Read More" For the rest of the Press Release.
Scrap says, "I think this one of the best combinations in hip-hop right now. This album has a lot of heart and soul and will change the way cats pick and chose what they really want to hear."
Young RJ, who cites legendary J Dilla and his father as the music producers who've had the most influence on him, can be distinguished as a producer among producers because of his versatility. From pop, to rock, to R&B, and of course hip-hop, but he always strives to "push the envelope," he says.
"If everybody else is doing snap music, I don't want to just do snap music. I might do some southern tracks but it's still going to have my feel to it— that soulful element."
Further, he says that the difference between this project and others he's worked on is that this project is all about having fun and making good music. "We're going to make good music. Instead of just trying to go in and … focusing on a single, we're just trying to make good music."
And Big Pooh, whose career began in college as a member of the North Carolina-based group Little Brother, echoes RJ's hopeful, expectant sentiments about their upcoming project. "You can find a lot of beat makers … but they don't actually know how to make a song out of the beat, and that's what separates [RJ] from a lot of beat makers out there."
So the rapper says he's letting the producer guide the project, and take him to "different places musically" where he will be able to continue honing his craft: lyricism. The two artists, who hale from two musically different regions of the country (one from the Midwest, the other from the South), knew of each other's work before Scrap Dirty brought them together and initiated a partnership between the two. Because of their passion for all things musical, Big Pooh and Young RJ will forge together their backgrounds, individualized styles and approaches to music making to create an album that will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the hip-hop culture.

Q-TIP: 'RAP IS DYING'

Posted by Matchz Malone On 7:24 PM 0 comments
Rapper Q-TIP is mourning the demise of hip-hop, because he's sure the genre is heading for a slow death. The A Tribe Called Quest star claims rap is destined for the same demise dischttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.quote.gif
insert blockquoteo suffered, if the latest batch of stars can't reinvent the musical genre in time. He tells celebrity fan Leonardo DiCaprio in the latest edition of Interview magazine, "I think it's pretty evident - and everybody says it - that hip-hop is definitely not as good as it once was. It's sort of like disco was. "There was a time when disco was the s**t and Steve Rubell had Studio 54. But the minute you heard Disco Duck by Rick Dees, that was the telltale sign that disco was over. I think that if hip-hop continues on the path that it seems like it's going down, then it looks like it's not going to hold up."

Curtis headed down under

Posted by Matchz Malone On 6:47 PM 0 comments

US rapper 50 Cent is headed down under as a guest of next month's MTV Australia Awards.

The 11 times Grammy-nominated artist and movie star will join already announced acts, Juliet Lewis and fellow hip hop star Eve at the awards, to be held in Sydney on April 26. Click "Read More" for the full story.

"He is one of the biggest selling rap artists in history and there is no doubt that he is going to put a fantastic performance together for the awards show," MTV Australia's Ean Thorley told smh.com.au. "For MTV we are really concerned with his music, what he does out of life is not of concern to us."

50 Cent, real name Curtis James Jackson III is as famous for his off stage life as he is for his music; including six months in prison in 1994 for selling cocaine and receiving nine bullet wounds in an attack in 2000.

He now heads up a multi-million dollar empire that includes a record label, clothing line, soft drink and even his own brand of condoms.

Fellow rap star Snoop Dogg, billed as a guest of the 2007 awards, was denied a visa due to drug charges but Thorley said he was hopeful 50 Cent, who last toured Australia in 2006, would be permitted entry.

"Having 50 cent here is a chance to give the viewers what they want ... the fact that he was here in 2006 is a positive thing."

A spokesman for the Department of Immigration said the department would not comment on individual applications.

Lyrics Below
Hello hello hello hello…

(MOS DEF)
Every anywhere heights plains peaks or valleys
Entrances exits vestibules and alleys
Winding roads that test the firm nerve
fortune or fatal behind the blind curve
The engine all purr life's flash to a blur
speed work through the earth make your motor go scurrr
tonight at noon watch a bad moon rising
identities in crisis and conflict diamonds
blindin staring at lights till they cryin
bone gristle popping from continuous grindin
grapes of wrath in a shapely glass
ingredients influential on your ways and ask
zero tolerance to raise the tax
it don't matter how your gates is latched
you aint safe from the danger jack
made a way before they made the map
or a GPS this is DEF leader

(DICE RAW)
I know where I'm goin even when its dark and being let down that road
Hello hello hello hello…
you don't see that somethings wrong earth's spinnin outta control
Hello hello hello hello…
Everything's for sale even souls someone get God on the phone
Hello hello hello hello…
Northside nigga Southside
Hello hello hello hello…
shits poppin off Worldwide
Hello hello hello hello…

(BLACK THOUGHT)
Between the greenhouse gases and earth spinnin off its axis
got mother nature doin back flips the natural disasters
its like 80 degrees in Alaska you in trouble if u not an Onasis
it aint hard to tell that the conditions is drastic
just turn on the telly check for the news flashin
how you want it bagged paper or plastic
lost in translation or just lost in traffic
yo I dont wanna floss I done lost my passion
and I ant trying to climb yo i lost my traction
they makin me break my contents under pressure
do not shake I'm workin while the boss relaxin
here come Mr. tax man he leavin a fraction give me back some
matter fact next pay check it's like that son
I'll fuck around and have to hurt a few men
They probably chalk it up as a disturbing new trend hello

(DICE RAW)
Chorus…

(TYLES P)
Should I say hello or should I say that hell is low
And my nigga are niggero I'm an African American
They sell drugs in the hood but the man he move the medicine
He'll prescribe you …… for everything
a little stuffy nose tell you get some Claritin
you know I'm hip to it and its hard to claim the land
when my great great great grands were shipped to it
look at technology they call it downloading
I call it downsizing somebody follow me
Does a computer chip have an astrology
When it fuck up could it give you an apology
Could it
Should it say hello or should it say goodbye
Try to understand how smart and how hood am I, It don't matter though
until we learn that the world don't turn right ,we all on the scatter though

Snoop Dogg has landed his own cartoon that is slated to debut as part of Comedy Central’s new block of programming the network has announced. Snoop Dogg’s untitled cartoon is among a group of new shows being produced by actors like David Alan Grier, Andy Richter and Adam Sandler. According to Variety, Snoop Dogg’s cartoon recreates the rapper’s life as a teen growing up in Long Beach, California in 1980’s. Snoop Dogg, 36, will also serve as executive producer of the cartoon, along with Tom Lynch.

"We've been looking to get into business with Snoop, who's always fantastic on our roasts," Comedy Central original programming development President Lauren Corrao said. "He's one of those people who truly crosses over between music and comedy."

The news comes as the rapper delves into daytime television as well, with a high profile appearance on ABC’s classic soap opera, One Life to Live. In addition to featuring a special remix of the show’s theme song on May 8th and 9,Snoop Dogg will act in a few scene and perform "Sensual Seduction" and "Life of Da Party" from his new album Ego Trippin.

He got all star producers working with him so it should be good to see. His first show on MTV, Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, was pretty funny. Also just a fun fact I found Snoop Dogg is endorsed by a candy from Switzerland that tastes like marijuana but it is banned in some cities in the U.S. Oh DARN!

This is a hip hop group from my hometown of Baltimore. The group is Dat Boi San, Guapo (I went to middle school with him, he's a cool kid) Ceasar and SIN-CRE. Check out their myspace at www.myspace.com/dankonline and give some of their music a listen. This writer personally likes "Falsetto". Good beats, and pretty good rhymes.

Peace,

Wale... the new 50?

Wale "Interscope" Folarin

It has just been announced on 93.9 WKYS that DC-area hip hop artist, Wale, has signed with Interscope Records in a joint venture deal with three-time Grammy award winning producer Mark Ronson’s Allido Records. Wale, 23, has seen a tremendous amount of success for an unsigned hip hop artist over the past year, gracing the covers of URB and DNR magazines, doing remixes for Justice, Chris Brown and MIA, performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, song licenses with Nike, ENTOURAGE and MTV and a growing internet buzz surrounding his most recent mixtape 100 MILES AND RUNNING and his upcoming Seinfeld-inspired project, THE MIXTAPE ABOUT NOTHING. Entertainment Weekly recently reported that the mixtape features a skit from Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Top 10 Artists NOT From The Hip-Hop HQs

Posted by Matchz Malone On 3:00 PM 0 comments
I had recently been thinking, to get put on now a days it seems like you have to be from one of the hip-hop HQ's. By hip-hop HQ (Headquarters) I mean New York, Atlanta (Georgia), Miami (Florida), California, Texas and Chicago (Illinois). They are flooding the radio, so it made me think... "Who are the top 10 artists who aren't from one of these locations?" It started off rather difficult being that a couple of these places are states, after a long process of thought and talking with friends I had too many. I ended up narrowing the list to this.

10. Oddisee - Washington, D.C.: "Oddisee 101" is in session. Amir (not to be confused with ?uestlove) is a great producer and even better lyricist. Known now for his Foot in the Door mixtape DJ'd by none other than the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff. Oddisee got his first break though on Jazzy Jeff's - The Magnificent, which was released in 2002. Now I dont know when he will actually be releasing a CD but until then his Mixtape's will suffice. Be sure to check out Foot In The Door & Oddisee 101 as well as his instrumental mixtapes. The new Kanye maybe?

Oddisee - Boogie (I'd like to note, if you don't like Boogie, you don't like rap music)

Read on for the rest of the list.

9. Jean Grae - Cape Town, South Africa: Miss Jean Grae of the Blacksmith Movement. Throughout her career she has also collaborated with artists such as, Atmosphere, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Phonte, Masta Ace, C-Rayz Walz, & Immortal Technique. She is currently Re-Releasing her underground classic Jeanius that she did with 9th Wonder. Lookout for her this year, though she is re-releasing her CD it will include new tracks like "Love Thirst". If this is what rappers from Africa sound like I want to hear more of them.

Jean Grae - Love Thirst

8. The Clipse - Virgina Beach, Virginia:Now I'm going to admit I didn't like their second album or agree with all the beef they have went through. But their first album was greatness and "Grindin'" will be song and beat I will remember forever. But hopefully they won't let me down and bring out another good album in 2008.
Clipse - Wamp Wamp (What It Do) Remix ft. Slim Thug

7. Dead Prez - Tallahassee, Florida: As a student of FAMU I am forced to respect these artists. They tend to be politically conscious emcees, as well they are known for trying to oust the radio with tracks such as "Hip-Hop" and "Turn off the Radio" Dead Prez has an album called Information Age slated for release November of this year.

>>You wanna say anything about the direction of that album before we get outta here?
Dead Prez new record is an international sound, high energy nothin’ but the truth on every joint and is nothing like any music we’ve ever done before. That’s real talk! Me and M-1 been in the lab ain’t takin’ no showers seven days in a row, just goin’ hard! We have not broken up. We not beefin’, we workin’. We just growin’ up as men. On the album we bustin’ shots—in a positive way.Source

Dead Prez - Hell Yeah (Remix) ft Jay-Z

6. Ray Cash - Cleveland, Ohio: Some call him the guy that brought Cleveland back during Bone Thugs long hiatus. I just call him Ray Cash. Ray Cash got my respect for taking a bold stance against bubblegum rap on his track P.A.N. (Pussy Ass Niggas) off his album C.O.D. (Cash on Delivery), I dont know if I would be bold enough to do a track like that with Pastor Troy yelling "Pussy Ass Niggas!!!" on it, because I can think of a few artists who could jump into a beef on that (but thats for another blog post). Regardless I leave you with The Payback as a showcase of Ray Cash's lyricism and finesse on the mic. (Ray Cash - The Kingdom coming 20??)

Ray Cash - The Payback

5. Little Brother - Durham, North Carolina: Coming in at number 5 is Little Brother, the rap group that keeps it real. Known for such lines as "I scoop you up in my porsche, sike you know i got a Nissan", or discussing the reals of a relationship on tracks like Slow It Down, these brothers are loved by the media even though it doesnt show in the sales. Garnering such respects as 4 mics & 4.5 mics in the source as well as an XL in XXL. Look out for these brothers solo projects coming soon, Leave It All Behind (Foreign Exchange), Dirty Pretty Things (Big Pooh), Tigallo Loves the 80s (Phonte & Zo!) & The Recipe(Big Pooh & Young RJ). It should be noted for more great artists not from any of the HQs you should check out the rest of the Hall of Justus.

Little Brother - That Aint Love ft. Jozeemo (Faceemo Remix)

4. Skillz - Richmond, Virgina: The legendary ghostwriter had to make the list. He has written for such people as P. Diddy, Foxy Brown, JD & Mase. He is also notorious for the Rap Up's he has been doing since 2002 of the ends of the year. He has released few LP's but many mixtapes, we're looking for a new album from him hoping So Far, So Good ft. Common, isnt just some random track but will be on album.

Skillz - So Far, So Good ft. Common

3. Eminem - Detroit, Michigan: What can you say about a man who has sold over 70 million records and is the highest selling rap artist ever, besides... he must be doing something right. To see the sheer brilliance & lyricism of Eminem there is no need to look further than The Marshal Mathers LP which includes such tracks as Kill You, Who Knew, & Stan. Stan became a staple in all hip-hop heads vocabularies as "a "stan" is an overzealous maniacal fan for any celebrity or athlete". I normally use it just to mean someone who believes they are an artists number on fan.
Look out for King Mathers (or whatever he decides to name it), coming 20??

Eminem - Sing For the Moment

2. Redman - Newark, New Jersey: What can you say about the Funk Doctor Spock, except thats what he is. The Funk Doctor been hittin since 1992, with such tracks as "How High", "Da Rockwilder", "Ill Be Dat" & one of my favorites "Let's Get Dirty". His guest appearances on songs have also been quite memorable (think Rappers Delight with Erick Sermon) His most recent album Red Gone Wild reached number 13 on the Billboard 200. Personally I would like to see another Red & Meth album, but hey, we can't all get what we want, can we.

Redman - Put It Down

And NUMBER ONE on the list of Top 10 Artists not from the Hip-Hop HQs is....

1. The Legendary Roots Crew - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: The easiest choice for number one. What other group has been bringing album after album of hard-hitting material, live instrumentation, can be said as being that LIVE on tour. None other than the Legendary Roots Crew. Not only do they have an ill roster of emcees (Black Thought, Malik B, Dice Raw, Peedi Peedi [unofficial member]) but the rest of the roots rocks too. Shout outs to ?uestlove. As for Peedi Crakk/Peedi Peedi being a member of the roots, ?uestlove gave him an invitation to join & Black Thought wasn't havin it, he let him down easy though and called Peedi "Family".

The Roots - Get Busy ft. Dice Raw & Peedi Crakk

Check out these projects from The Roots Crew:
The Roots - Rising Down (April 29th, 2008)
Black Thought's - Dangerous Thoughts (in collaboration with Danger Mouse)
Dice Raw - Reclaiming the Dead (October 24th, 2000)
Peedi Peedi - Pimp Ya Pen (Mixtape)

________________________________________________________________________

Philadelphia Honorable Mentions: to that hard hittin crew from the Illidelf - Cassidy, Eve,
Freeway, Beanie Sigel... all are great lyricists, but i didnt want to flood
this list with Philly cats. They used to be a Hip-hop HQ but they havent been getting that exposure lately, which is the other reason I am not putting them on the list.

Other Honorable Mentions: Joe Budden (Born in NY, raised in New Jersey), One Be Lo [of Binary Star] (Pontiac, Michigan), Drake (Toronto, Canada), Jedi Mind Tricks (Philly). Jedi Mind Tricks isn't in the philly category cuz if you've ever heard them you would notice that they do not fit in with any of them.

NO Lil Wayne does not make this list, ill give him an honorable mention
though for somehow convincing the masses that he is the greatest... that
takes work and a good publicist.

Slick Rick would have made this list but he hasnt made an album since 1999

I would suggest going to check out artists from all of these areas as well as the ones that didn't make the list. And next time you get ready to pop in your ATL SHAWTY! mixtape, think to yourself, do i have any alternatives.

Anyone I forgot?

Top 5 Artists to look out for in 2008

Posted by gogoluver On 2:58 PM 0 comments
I know I am kinda late but I mean I had to see what the hip hop world was working with before I made some wrong decisions.

5. Wale

I know it seems that I talk about this dude a lot. But it just feels good that someone from my city of Washington D.C. is FINALLY putting our name in the hip hop circuit. He is signed to Allido Records which is headed by the hot producer at the time Mark Ronson. All his mixtapes have been getting better and better and his new mixtape is supposed to drop at the end of March.

Check out Wale's brand new single Wale ft. Bun B & Pusha T - Back In The Go-Go off his Mixtape About Nothing [This single was added to this post by Matchz]

4. Skyzoo

Well, when you make your debut with 9th Wonder you are bound to be the next one up. New York has been on the downfall for the past couple years lately but maybe he will revive it. He has been named Top 10 MCs alive by Hot 97. I don't think I will go that far. But he will eventually make his name for himself in the industry

Click Read More for complete list.

3. Torae

Ever since I downloaded Torae new mixtape on a limb, it has been in daily rotation along with Mood Muzik 3. He surprised me with the people he worked with since he was from the New York area. But he has good production and lyrics behind him so hopefully he continues producing hits.

2. Drake

Who ever thought a hip hop artist would come from Toronto, Canada??? I thought they listen to polka up there. But Drake has clearly proven me wrong with the The Comeback Season mixtape that has men and women appreciating his work.

1. Blu

I thought the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5 were pretty much the last good things coming out of the West Coast. But when a musically endowned friend told me about "Below the Heavens" I had to give it a quick listen and since have not put it down. His subject matters are so unique and opens up himself to you. So if you haven't downloaded "Below the Heavens" yet, I ADVISE YOU TOO OR YOUR HIP HOP COLLECTION WILL NOT BE COMPLETE.

Sunz of Soul - Birth of a Movement

Posted by Matchz Malone On 1:44 PM 0 comments
Album Artist: Blak Mamba and Jewels
Album Producer: Jewels

Album: Birth of a Movement

Release Date: 8/2007 (I know, late review, but I just found out about them)

Track Listing:
(ALL tracks produced, recorded & mixed by Jewels)
1. First Things 1st
2. D.C. Come On
3. How It Is
4. Yeah Y'all
5. Hard Times
6. Soul 48
7. Life, Love feat. Shawn Struggle
8. 2
9. We Funk-A feat. Passage
10. On Some Other
11. Bass & Treble
12. Don't Sleep
13. Sayin Nuthin
14. Brotha on the Run
15. Footsteps feat. Anonamas
16. Stress Relief (cubed)

Hailing from the nations capital is Sunz of Soul (Blak Mamba & Jewels), a hip-hop duo who gives me a CunninLynguists, old school Common vibe. The album is full of smooth beats, and odes to their home of D.C. & P.G.'s County, Maryland. Click "Read More" for the full review.

Lyrics - 9

The lyrics on this album are great, these boys obviously have a large vocabulary and manage to incorporate it very well into their songs. They also toss in a lot of D.C. slang. These boys have also been killing the hooks, Phonte style. The track entitled 2 takes a note from Jay-Z 22-2's or Kanye West's Two Words and completes the rhyme on the foundation of 2 emphasizing at the end "2 many phony rappers, not enough MC's" and I could not agree more.

I'd like to note though it is not necessary lyrics, but sound they have a heavy D.C. accent, reminiscent of Oddisee & Wale.

Production - 9

Though the beats are good, occasionally they are too mellow and take away from the lyrics of the album (only thing keeping the production from being a 10). As I said the production is still good, on tracks like Soul 48 you get the vibe of real instrumentation full of horns. D.C. Come On & How It Isgives you that hard hitting tracks (production wise) from the album, they are pretty uptempoed. With the exception of a few tracks their is a heavy CunninLynguists vibe I get from this album. As everyone knows Kno of CunninLynguists be hittin', so you won't be disappointed

Song Concepts - 8

This is where I begin to have problems with the album. There is a little too much references to D.C. & P.G. County, Maryland. Its almost as if they figured the only people who would hear their album were from that area. Now I'm all for repping your city but their is more to an album than just that, I was hoping that this would be gotten out of the way with the track D.C. Come On (which is a great track by the way) but it carries on to almost every track with references to Ben's Chilly Bowl. I cant hold them 100% accountable, some artists struggle so hard to get put on that they mention their city all the time & it became a trend.

Stand out tracks:
note: click on any of the track names below to download/listen to them.

First Things 1st: A great intro. A short track that leads you into the vibe of the album. Great wisdom comes out of this short track "You nigga's want beasts, yo the money comes FIRST", I guess they aren't up for rhyming for free.

I must admit originally I thought the word Beasts was Beef due to that D.C. lisp some artists from the area carry.

Footsteps: It's funny that this is one of my favorites, because it doesn't feature any verses from either of the two. This song is performed by Anonamas who is a very talented female singer/lyricist. She kind of reminds me of Jill Scott... and those are some big words. (I will be going to purchase her CD from their website). I guess Jewels (the producer) was taking a note from Kanye & Common with My Way Home and wanted to showcase some of his production with another artist on top.

2: "2 much of the same shit on the radio, see" "2 many phony rappers not enough MC's" He had me sold right there. This track is full of little witty lines headed off by the number 2. List for yourself on this one, only through listening can you fully understand this track.

Overall - 8/10

Great album from Sunz of Soul, I will be looking for more from them and their Infinite Soul Music collective. I'd suggest going to your local cd shop (not best buy, we talking the stores that carry you KNOW you'd be able to find Little Brother or MF Doom at) and buy the album and listen to it for yourself

Jill Scott - The No. 1 Lady

Posted by Matchz Malone On 12:41 PM 0 comments
While music may be Scott's calling card for now, she's recent added "actress" to her resume. She starred in Tyler Perry's 2007 movie "Why Did I Get Married?" and HBO just announced it will broadcast a drama series based on the detective book series "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," in which Scott plays the leading lady.

Go Jill, I remember when I first saw her in that body suit in the Tyler Perry movie I was scared. I hadn't realized it was a body suit and was like "Noooo!, she looked good at her weight" all is well.

More on Jill's recent works after the jump. One of her other upcoming ventures is a bra line
"I'm working on an intimates line called the 'Butterfly Collection' with Ashley Stewart — we're starting with bras for larger-chested women that still want to feel sexy," she said, adding that the line should come out in late April.

Scott has always been very open about her size and she said her positive self-image is a trait she inherited from her mother and grandma: "They always installed in me a sense of self-dignity regardless of anything."

Do your thing Jill, read the full article at ReadExpress.com

DISTURBING THE PEACE: DTP splits with Def Jam

Posted by Matchz Malone On 7:10 PM 1 comments

Sohh Gyant broke the news today [February 29th, 2008] with this post, saying….

“According to SEVERAL of my close Def Jam sources all hell is breaking loose on Ludacris DTP imprint. Apparently when the label brought all their R&B artists to perform at Spotlight for LA Reid, along with a bunch of industry heads in NYC earlier this week, the feedback was less then thrilling. The performances were SOHH lackluster that a source told me that LA told Luda that he can take his acts and “hit the road”.
The full story after the jump. As of right now Bobby Valentino, Shareefa, and the extremely talented Stephan Jones, AKA Mr. Ordinaray has all been dropped. Sources close to Bobby claim that the artist plans on dropping his next untitled CD on iTunes. No word yet on where Shareefa, and Steph Jones will end up.

Word on the streetz is that DTP heads are planning on severing ties with Def Jam over all the drama.”

Well, yes, I’m hearing some confirmation that DTP is leaving Def Jam, but that “it was a mutual agreement.” There were differences in vision between DTP and LA Reid and that Luda’s label wanted more of a major push.

Knowing Luda, Chaka and Jeff Dixon, they’ll be more than good in their next move. We’ll see which artists survive the trip.

Props to Miss Info

How do you all feel about this?

Talib Kweli - MCEO Mixtape

Posted by Matchz Malone On 10:58 PM 0 comments
Attack of the MCEO and DJournalist

So not only are Mick Boogie and Talib Kweli putting out this new mixtape, MCEO, on their own on Monday (check mickboogie.com, myspace.com/talibkweli and illroots.com), but they decided to do everything else, too. Talib is the MC and the CEO (hence "MCEO") and Mick is the DJournalist. Mick's first work is below. He asked the tough questions and sometimes, he even answered them. Still, URB.com is the OG source, so remember where you heard aobut this new project first, as well as the promise of a reunion we've all been waiting for (but not the big reunion we've all been waiting for).

What is the MCEO project?

Mick: It’s Kweli working as not only an artist and emcee, but as the CEO of Blacksmith as well. This project is about not just the music business, but the business of music.Kweli: I had to master the language of business in the same way I have mastered lyricism in order to keep bringing it the way I want it brought. Being MCEO is just a continuation of who I am as an MC.
